TATEHANA BUNRAKU: The Love Suicides on the Bridge, Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain

PARIS | PROJECT 舘鼻文楽「The Love Suicides on the Bridge」 カルティエ現代美術財団

Noritaka Tatehana directed his first puppet theatre of Bunraku at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain. The stage, directed by Tatehana, consisted of a trilogy of classical pieces starring oiran (courtesans), which is typical of Tatehana, who is also known as the creator of "Heel-less Shoes," inspired by the high clogs used by oiran (courtesans). In addition, all of the props decorating the stage were works of art made by hand, a specialty of the production team led by Tatehana. In addition, the audience was limited to approximately 300 people over the two days to create the image of a small playhouse, which is the original form of ningyo joruri, a popular form of performing arts. Among the audience members who attended the performance were Tatehana's friend, French artist Jean-Paul Goude, and other celebrities, indicating the high level of interest in the show.
